Max is Henry Sugar's make-up artist. When Max is first introduced into the story, I wondered why he agreed to help Henry "steal" from casinos. However, later I realized Henry was simply using his skill to provide for the needy. Max takes Henry to all the casinos and provides disguises for Henry. Max is very important to the plot of the story because if it weren't for him Henry would be caught, and an end would be put to his "gambling."
